Quick answer:
If your fridge isn’t cooling, first check power, settings, airflow, and the door seal. Move food to an esky if temps rise above safe levels. If it’s still warm after these checks, it usually needs a proper diagnosis (fan, thermostat, blocked vents, or compressor issues).

Step 1: Protect your food (do this first)
- Put a thermometer in the fridge if you have one.
- If it feels warm, move perishables into an esky with ice.
- Keep doors closed as much as possible.
Step 2: 6 fast checks you can do in 3 minutes
1) Is it actually getting power?
- Lights on? Any display?
- Try another appliance in the same outlet.
2) Has the temperature been bumped?
- Set fridge to a mid setting and wait 30–60 minutes.
3) Is the fridge packed tight against the wall?
- If airflow is blocked, cooling drops fast.
- Pull it out a little so it can breathe.
4) Is the door seal leaking cold air?
- Close a piece of paper in the door.
- If it slides out easily, the seal may be worn.
5) Are vents inside blocked by food?
- Don’t stack items hard against the back vents.
6) Is the condenser area dusty?
- Dust can make cooling weaker over time.
- (If safe to access) gently vacuum visible dust.
Step 3: Signs it’s a repair job (not a “wait and see”)
You’ll usually need help if:
- The fridge is warm but the freezer is cold (or vice versa)
- It’s making loud clicking, buzzing, or grinding noises
- You see water pooling or frost build-up
- It runs constantly and never reaches temp
- It stops mid-cycle and restarts repeatedly
“I just want someone who turns up on time, explains the fault clearly, and gives a quote before you start.”
Common causes (plain English)
- Fan not running (no air moving)
- Thermostat/sensor issue (doesn’t “know” it’s warm)
- Blocked airflow (ice build-up or vent blockage)
- Dirty condenser (can’t shed heat)
- Compressor/start relay problems (won’t run properly)
What a good repair process should look like
A solid tech should:
- Diagnose first
- Give a fixed-price quote before work starts
- Get approval before touching parts
- Tell you if it’s worth repairing
- Aim to fix it in one visit when possible (common parts in the van)
Perth tip: Don’t wait in summer
In warmer months, a fridge can go from “kinda warm” to “food spoiled” surprisingly fast. If you’ve done the quick checks and it’s still not cooling, it’s usually cheaper to fix early than after it fails completely.
